Yahoo! can’t ever seem to do anything right. The most recent news has really hit me personally. I recently started using the cloud based bookmarking service Del.icio.us and I thought I had found the answer to all my problems.
It made keeping up with and organizing bookmarks easy. They also recently released an add-on for Firefox to add one-click bookmarking to their site. Just earlier this afternoon, Yahoo! announced that they were going to shut down the service.
I am a little shocked, and incredibly outraged as I feel that they are taking away a service without even asking if anyone cares. It was one of the original social sites that was focused on sharing links and information across the web. It really got me thinking about the power that we are giving to these companies as we base our day-to-day habits around these services. It’s hard to believe that a service that still had almost 350,000 users per month could just disappear. I know that with that kind of following, I am not the only one who is losing a service that they truly love.
I have explored other options and just wanted to show you two that you can use. Pinboard seems to be a popular option, and even outlines the pro’s and con’s of switching to their service right on their homepage. To me it seems a little too bare bones.
Another option I found is Diigo. It looks like it is pumped full of features and a little more geared to function like Delicious. I think this will be the option that I will be exploring over the next few months.
Delicious does allow you to export your bookmarks, so you can either import them into a browser or a new service. So at least you’re not going to be losing all of the links that you’ve spent the time creating.
Well Yahoo, it looks like you’re making another huge mistake. You really just can’t seem to get anything right. Just another reason you’ll always be number 2.
